Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using these drugs must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
