A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, a fortnight prior to the Melbourne event. The Australian Open noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the summer season," Williams stated. "I have experienced so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a venue that has been so significant to my career."

By the Numbers

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. This year will represent the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Establishing a Fresh Benchmark

The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to take part in an Australian Open main draw, eclipsing the record formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.

In late December, Williams wed Danish-born actor and model Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
