SNAP Payments Expected to Cease for Over 40 Million Amid Ongoing Federal Shutdown

Federal agriculture authorities declared recently that nutrition assistance payments from a major federal welfare initiatives will not be distributed in November because of the continuing federal closure.

Closure Continues For Nearly Four Weeks

The funding lapse had reached nearly a month when the announcement was made, in response to appeals by more than two hundred Congressional Democrats pushing the department to utilize reserve accounts to pay for November's food assistance.

“Ultimately, resources are exhausted,” the department confirmed. “Currently, assistance will not be provided” starting next month.

Millions Affected

More than 41 million individuals count on these food benefits, as reported by official statistics. Various areas, like New Mexico, use of the program affects one-fifth of the population.

Internal communications seen by Reuters showed that federal authorities chose not to tap reserve funds for November food benefits.

Political Stalemate

Congressional leaders continue to disagree over how to fund and reopen federal agencies.

A statement from the head of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities suggested that federal leadership had chances to take earlier action to prevent benefits from running out.

“It could have, and should have taken steps weeks ago to make arrangements to use these funds,” the remarks concluded. “Instead, officials could opt out in an effort to gain political advantage” as conservative leaders work to pressure Senate Democrats to support a spending bill that would resume the federal government.

States Prepare

State leaders from two affected states activated emergency protocols recently to make money available to address food insecurity expecting nutrition assistance payments stopping in November.
