Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Figure, Dies at 81 Years of Age

The world grieves the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican reggae singer and performer whose distinctive vocal talent was instrumental in spreading the reggae genre across the globe. The artist passed away at the age of 81.

“With deep sorrow that I share that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” wrote his wife Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am grateful for his family, close friends, fellow artists and coworkers who walked with him on his journey. To all his fans around the world, please know that your encouragement was his strength throughout his entire professional life … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was also signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.

Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hit songs including “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic musical style and positive spirit brought him a large and longstanding following.

In addition to his music accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972’s drama film The Harder They Come, a performance that received critical praise and is considered a cornerstone of Jamaican cinema.

Jimmy Cliff is among the select few of artists, including the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be awarded the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
