It might not have been at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. “This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a new presidential term. “If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future away from worry.” The event, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House. The swine, provided by a first responder, was christened after the current slang trend of young people shouting “6-7” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently made “6-7” its top term for the year. A Future Secured The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release. “This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message. “It embodies the spirit of Miami: happy, diverse, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Every time, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.” Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
